The seminar participants were introduced to the institutional and social context of promoting education of Roma in Serbia, the history and social status of Roma, causes of poor school success of Roma children, psychological needs of children, how to provide support to children and help them to start and complete their education. Special attention was focused on the problems faced by the children who had started their education in some of the countries of Western Europe. Their biggest problem is poor knowledge of Serbian, diverse working methodologies and school curricula in our country and the fact that very often returnee children lack all necessary documentation regarding what schools they used to attend.
This is the fifth in the series of seminars on working methods with Roma children and parents organised by Group 484 for leaders of the psychosocial programme for returnees under readmission agreements. So far, these seminars have been attended by 139 participants from 15 municipalities in Serbia and they have been empowered to support inclusion of Roma children into the educational system in accordance with the Strategy for Improvement of Roma Education in Serbia of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
The seminars were facilitated by trainers from nongovernmental organisation »IN (Inclusion Network) – the network for inclusion of Roma children« Sunčica Macura – Milovanović, Milijana Arsić, Sanja Tatić – Janevski and Mirjana Kovačević. The programme of the seminar »Roma child and school« has been accredited by the Ministry of Education.
